Emergency Department Surge Alerts

This feature is activated at the HCA division level.

Access: All users with access to view schedules and the staffing dashboard can also view surge alerts. Users may choose to hide or display the surge alert bar by clicking the preferences icon in the page header.

This feature utilizes an API integration between TrackER and Facility Scheduler (FS) to provide staffing analysts a snapshot of Emergency Department (ED) surge information so they can make timely staffing adjustments. When an Emergency Department (ED) experiences surge conditions, color-coded alerts display on the Schedule and Staffing Dashboard screens. The alert displays an abbreviated facility name and the surge duration. Alert data refreshes every 20 minutes.

Emergency Department Surge Alerts Displayed in the Staffing Dashboard

Alerts are color-coded based on the current Emergency Department Work Index (EDWIN) score. Yellow indicates an EDWIN score ≥ 1.5 lasting for 15 to 60 minutes. Red indicates an EDWIN score ≥ 1.5 exceeding 60 minutes. When the EDWIN score is < 1.5, the alert is removed from the alert bar. The actual time surge data was last updated displays in the upper right corner of the alert bar.

Click an alert to view additional information such as the full facility and department name, current EDWIN score, time in the current surge status (yellow or red), total time in surge conditions, volume of patients since midnight, and the actual census.
